Attention New Members: Sign Up Now for Troop 605!
Studies have shown that active participation in Scouting, and especially earning the highest ranks, can lead to higher levels of planning and organizational skills, goal mapping and tracking, assuming leadership roles in adulthood, and civic engagement. [ref] But we assemble our program in Troop 605 mostly to provide a safe and fun environment for young people to build lasting friendships. Have a look at how we do it.
The path to achieving the Eagle Scout rank, which involves earning 21 merit badges (including 14 required ones), holding leadership positions, being active as a Life Scout for at least six months, completing a community service project, and passing an Eagle Scout board of review is not an easy one, but one with a lifetime of rewards.
Our Troop finds Activities so important because they provide a fun and engaging framework for developing critical life skills and building strong character. Inherently they are hands-on, learn-by-doing experiences, that help the Scout become self-reliant as they travel down the path to Eagle.
Troop 605 offers a variety of aquatic sports through a combination of merit badges and awards. Key programs include Canoeing, Kayaking, and Rowing Merit Badges and awards such as Scuba BSA, Snorkeling BSA, Boardsailing BSA, and Whitewater Rafting Award.
Climbing sports in the Troop include rock climbing, rappelling, bouldering, and tower climbing, all governed by our Climb On Safely guidelines. Those Key safety procedures include using qualified instructors, conducting activities at established sites , using appropriate gear and employing techniques like belaying and spotting at all times.
Our Shooting Sports Program teaches firearm safety and marksmanship through age-appropriate activities like BB gun shooting, rifle, shotgun, and archery. Our primary goal is to teach the responsible handling of firearms and other sports equipment using range certified instructors and supervised programs.
High Adventure refers to physically demanding, challenging outdoor activities and expeditions offered in our Troop for older Scouts. The National High Adventure Bases: Philmont Scout Ranch (backpacking), Florida Sea Base (aquatic adventures), and Northern Tier (canoeing) are capstone journeys to test a Scout's skills, resilience, and appreciation for the outdoors.
Our Troop takes Career Exploration seriously by connecting our youth with professionals in various fields for hands-on experience and mentorship. Programs exist for a wide range of careers, from law enforcement and EMS to aviation, from plumbing and dentistry to automotive maintenance - all focus on providing real-world experience and character-building activities.
The principles of leaving the outdoors as you found it are central to our outdoor programs. Merit Badge courses in Soil and Water Conservation, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, and Nature help our Scouts develop a greater appreciation for the Environment through direct experience.
Community Service is important to our Troop because it teaches our youth to serve others and be part of something bigger than themselves. It's a fundamental part of the program, with service hours required for rank advancement and merit badges.
