Aquatic awards are designed to introduce Scouts to specific aquatic activities and are earned by completing required training, safety, and skills, after passing the BSA swimmer test. They are a perfect way to promote fitness and fun awards to earn for Scouts and Adults alike.
Mile Swim BSA is an award that recognizes those who swim a mile. To earn it, participants must complete training under a qualified instructor, pre-qualify for the distance by demonstrating their ability, and then successfully swim a mile over an approved course.
Kayaking BSA is an award which includes learning basic kayaking skills and water safety for calm water activities.
Snorkeling BSA is an award for Scouts that teaches safe snorkeling skills, including using equipment, swimming with a buddy, and demonstrating advanced techniques like object recovery and survival floating.
Scuba BSA is an award that tests the basics of scuba diving through an introductory experience in a pool, but not a certification course. It covers skills like assembling equipment, breathing underwater, and clearing a mask, all taught by certified instructors.
Boardsailing BSA is an award for Scouts that introduces them to the basic skills, equipment, and safety precautions of boardsailing (also known as windsurfing).
BSA stand up paddleboarding is a program for Scouts to earn an award by learning the basics of the sport, including equipment, safety, skills like paddling and self-rescue, and required aquatic and safety tests.
Whitewater BSA is an award pertaining to safety and paddling skills for navigating turbulent river waters. To earn these, participants must learn about equipment, river hazards, and safety protocols, with the award requiring direct supervision by a professional guide.
Lifeguarding BSA is a professional-level lifeguard training program for those in Scouting working at aquatic facilities and programs, often including an American Red Cross certification as a component.
Troop programs provide opportunities for everything from basic swimming and boating to advanced activities like scuba diving and kayaking, all while emphasizing safety through standardized training like Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat.
