The three shooting sports merit badges in Scouts are Archery, Rifle Shooting, and Shotgun Shooting. These programs emphasize safety and responsible use, and all range activities must be supervised by certified instructors. Scouts can also participate in other programs like tomahawk throwing, sporting arrows, and cowboy action shooting, which are sometimes offered as part of broader "Range and Target Activities"
The Rifle Shooting Merit Badge shows you how a rifle works, how to handle it safely, and how to care for it.
Learn shotgun safety, the laws for owning a shotgun and more by earning your Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge.
Requirements for Archery Merit Badge include explaining safety rules and whistle commands, identifying parts of a bow, and demonstrating shooting proficiency by hitting a target with a minimum score.
Tomahawk throwing is an approved activity for Scouts BSA and older, requiring adherence to safety guidelines and following instructions in the National Range and Target Activities Manual.
All Troop shooting sports programs emphasize the ethical use of firearms and target practice in a controlled and highly supervised environment. Instructors stress the safe storage of firearms and the need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. In addition to NRA and/or USA Archery certifications, our leaders are required to have completed specific BSA Range Activity Safety training.
